Missing Link (Uganda) – Latrine Project Update

This is the 3rd update from this project (see earlier posts):

We were awarded a grant of £5,500 (UGX 25,703,684) from Kitchen Table Charities Trust
(KTCT) Grantee Committee on 28th February 2019 for construction of a five stance, disabled
friendly, VIP (Ventilation Improve Pit) latrine, with separate facilities for boys and girls urinals,
and handwashing facilities at Abubaker Nursery and Primary School in Busanule Village,
Buwofu, Namukonge Parish in Bugiri District, Uganda. This grant was transferred to Missing
Link Uganda bank account on 7th January 2020.

The overriding goal of the project was to improve hygiene and sanitation in the school among pupils and their teachers hence improving their lives.

A five stance, disabled friendly, VIP (Ventilation Improve Pit) latrine, with separate facilities for boys and girls, boys urinals, and handwashing facilities (see photographs attached under this report) was constructed and completed in the second week of February 2020 with commissioning done on 15th February 2020. In attendance during the commissioning were the Local Council One leadership, Health Inspector, Parents, School management, Children, and a few members of the community.

VIP disabled unit: The project that is now in use has a separate unit for children with disabilities with adequate space for maneuverability while entering the VIP latrine, within the latrine, leaving the latrine, and washing the hands.  The children with physical disabilities have two entrances and exits that they can use. They can access the latrine directly or through an entrance near the water tank on the left. This also applies to accessing water for handwashing.

Handwashing facilities: A tank has been installed to harvest rainwater from the rooftop. This facility will enable children to wash their hands after visiting the latrines. We have advised the school to stock enough soap such that children are able to wash their hands with soap in order to kill germs

Urinals: The project has two separate urinals, for girls and boys. This further enhances privacy among the pupils.

Training in Hygiene and Menstruation: Sensitization and training of pupils and their teachers on the wise utilization and maintenance of the structures of facilities, including removing dead flies, spider webs, dust, and debris from the ventilation screen to ensure a good flow of air was done. Hygiene education will also be enforced at all times.

We have also identified 3 female teachers who will train the girls on menstruation cycles and care for menstruation periods

Conclusion

This is the first such project in the Parish and a big boost to this school and the community. In conclusion, we are very grateful to KTCT for having financed this project and extending a helping hand towards lifting the standard of education for the underprivileged and we thus look forward to future engagements.
