Malawi Rural Water and Sanitation Project

Water Works would like to thank Kitchen Table for a grant of £6,000, which will assist two villages in Malawi, (consisting of about 60 households and 260 people), meeting their need for clean water and hygienic sanitation.

The programme involves mobilising communities to improve their water, sanitation and hygiene behaviours through the provision of a hygiene awareness programme, the construction of latrines and hand-washing systems at the household level and the installation of a sustainable waterpoint in each village.  Our projects have been found to dramatically reduce the percentage of children under five suffering from diarrhoea within the previous 2 weeks from 16.7% to 4%.

In addition, tree planting will be introduced, providing both fruit (mango, guava, pawpaw and banana) and wood for fuel. A hundred seedlings will be planted in disused latrine pits exploiting the nutrients left there and below the water point where they could be irrigated by the run-off water.
